HEIR TODAY
© Bob Wright
I can’t believe
you left it to me
what am I
supposed to do with it
of all of the things
it coulda been
why’d you go
and leave me that
you coulda left me a hat
you know I got
the head for that
you coulda left me
an old pair of shoes
you know that I would get
some use out of those
I can’t believe
you left it to me
what am I
supposed to do with it
of all of the things
it coulda been
why’d you go
and leave me that
I can always use clothes
or one of those little round
red clown noses
I don’t know
what you were thinking
you must have been up
all night drinking
I can’t believe
you left it to me
what am I
supposed to do with it
of all of the things
it coulda been
why’d you go
and leave me that
here today
heir tomorrow
we all have a pretty short stay
with all the grief
and all the sorrow
did you even consider
all the taxes
I’d pay
on it
I can’t believe
you left it to me
what am I
supposed to do with it
of all of the things
it coulda been
why’d you go
and leave me...
why’d you go
and leave me...
why’d you go
and leave me at all

Who Gets To Stay

WHO GETS TO STAY?
© Bob Wright
Who gets to stay?
Is what we’re all saying
And it’s tearing the country apart
Should we speak the same language
Should we all tackle Spanish
Does it matter… if we speak from the heart?
Who gets to stay? It is all so confusing
And it’s hard to know just what to think
Do we hire illegals or force them to leave
Does it matter if the economy stinks?
Are there too many Irishmen not enough Jews
Do we tell all the Mexicans we’ve had it with you
Do we shut down our borders and put up a wall
Or open the quotas and welcome them all
Who gets to stay? Has it all gone so far
That we call out the dogs and we fence in the yard
Do we load up the shotguns hold up your green cards
Do we celebrate diversity by reducing the odds
Are there too many Indians, Muslims and Sikhs
Do we tell all the Russians
We’d like them to leave
Do we shut ourselves off
From the rest of the world
Or ditch all the quotas and welcome them all
Who gets to stay?
Were your grandparents welcome
When they first stepped ashore in this land
Admit it or not they probably weren’t
That’s the fate of the immigrant man
Who gets to stay?
There are no easy answers
But one thing is perfectly clear
That we’ve come pretty far and we owe what we are
To the people who chose to come here

GLIMMERGLASS
© Bob Wright
the tide is turning
I see it eddying
around the buoys
near the strand
I’m walking on
off in the distance
foreign lands
are waiting for me
I often wonder
about them
and the ocean
like glimmerglass
mirrors
everything that I see
every cloud
that goes skimming past
rushes by
under and over me
my life is turning
I see it eddying
around the people
near the strand
I’m walking on
off in the distance
foreign people
walking on a strand
do they wonder
about me
and the ocean
like glimmerglass
mirrors
everything that I see
every thought
that goes skimming past
rushes by
under and over me

IF
© Bob Wright
if I talk I might lie
if I sing I might cry
when I dance with an angel
the devils close by
and I wonder sometimes
if I should be concerned
if I’m low I get high
if I’m sad I might smile
when I stroll by the seashore
my eyes on the sky
and I wonder sometimes
if I should be concerned
I try and I try
to change what I’m doing
but everyone tells me
thats called being human
it all sounds to me
like a bunch of excuses
but I like to
use them
if I talk and I lie
if I sing and I cry
if I dance with an angel
with the devil close by
and I wonder sometimes
if I should be concerned
its a wonder how much
I still have to learn

TRUTH
© Bob Wright
I have to say it out loud
the truth will never be known
I’ve tried to set it straight
but I’m getting old
it ain’t the same for us all
it shifts around like the wind
try it on for size
you might win
in the end
there are always
at least two sides
someone goes home happy
somebody cries
there never was a plan
I was along for the ride
you don’t have to believe me
but I got nothing left to hide
it was so long ago
we were all just kids
we never thought our lives
would be defined by it
people believe
what they want to believe
they don’t want reasons
they just go by how it seemed
Now I’m the only one left
it barely matters to me
they tell me I’ll be
judged by history
I could live with that
if I had the time
but the doctors tell me
that I’ve reached the
end of the line

Bob Wright/ Harbortown New York, New York
He is a multi-instrumentalist, an award winning songwriter and Bob Wright songs are often mistaken for traditional songs because their immigrant roots run deep beneath the surface of America and back to the places they came from for nurturing and inspiration. They surface in a modern world, constructed with a modern sensibility and a comforting resonance with the past. ... more
