about

I don’t believe any other songwriter/musician/individual has affected me as deeply as John Hartford not only in in his approach to, and dedication to his art but in the way he embraced his muse, often at the expense of fame and fortune. I wanted to celebrate the man with a song and, since writing the truth resonates the most, this is an absolutely true story from my life.

lyrics

JOHN HARTFORD
© Bob Wright

I saw him for the first time
down IN old New York
sawin on a fiddle
dancin up a storm
people clapped and people cheered
he looked so relaxed up there
I saw him at the Seaport in New York

I don’t believe I ever did see
ANYthing like that
pickin on a banjo
underneath a bowler hat
yeah he could pick and he could sing
he could make that banjo ring
I never did see anything like that

so heres to John
and heres to fiddles
banjos hats and all those rivers
flowing through the music that he played
heres to dancing
heres to songs
heres to keep on keeping on
we’ll always have the music that he made

I saw him for the last time
AT the music Hall in Troy
right across the river there
my grandpa was born
Ol’ Cap was a riverman
I’d like to think that they are friends
I saw him for the last time up in Troy

so heres to John
and heres to fiddles
banjos hats and all those rivers
flowing through the music that he played
heres to dancing
heres to songs
heres to keep on keeping on
we’ll always have the music that he made
